The gloves came off last night in the Republican presidential debate in California. Mitt Romney accused Senator John McCain of misrepresenting his position on Iraq calling it (quote) tricks that Ronald Reagen would call reprehensible. McCain took shots at Romney's work as a CEO in the private sector and then continued to accuse him of supporting timetables for withdrawal in Iraq. Romney says those charges are false.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is throwing his support to John McCain. Schwarzenegger says he is impressed with McCain's commitment to reducing global warming as well as his support for alternative fuel sources. Schwarzenegger also praised McCain for being willing to reach across the aisle to work with Democrats. McCain is also set to receive endorsements from Georgia's two Republican senators.
Detroit's mayor is asking for forgiveness from his family and his city over a sex scandal. During a televised apology, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick also vowed not to resign. A local newspaper uncovered racy text messages sent between the Democratic mayor and his ex-chief of staff. Kilpatrick and his chief of staff denied having an affair. She stepped down yesterday. A prosecutor is now investigating whether they lied under oath.
Some more trouble for Britney Spears. The pop star was hospitalized this morning. Police said only that she was taken to a hospital late last night to (quote) get help. This is the second hospital visit for Spears this month.
Here is a Super Bowl surprise. TV sales are up. It's good news for stores at a time when a lot of people are worried about the economy and so they're tightening up their purse strings. One industry survey estimates that consumers will buy close to 4 million new televisions in time for the big game on Sunday.
And those are the headlines at this hour. Stay with CNN for more on those stories and all your other news of the day.

While visiting Kansas City, President Bush told an audience that there are serious signs the economy is weakening. And there are reports more cuts are on the way.

Iraqi officials say two mentally disabled women were strapped into explosive vests which were then detonated by remote control after the women were sent to two separate markets, at least 98 people killed, more than 200 others wounded. Iraqi officials say the women most likely didn't even know they were outfitted with explosives.

Good afternoon, I'm Naamua Delaney at the CNN center in Atlanta. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
President Bush is sending Congress the biggest budget in US history, a 3.1-trillion-dollar plan. The proposal would support increases in military spending while squeezing most government programs outside of national security. The budget projects deficits of more than 400 billion dollars for each of the next two years, but predicts a balance budget by 2012. Democrats say the full cost is based on faulty math that included only 70 billion dollars for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2009.
A suicide attack in Israel today is the first one there in a year. Police say the bomber killed one person and wounded 11 others at a shopping mall in southern Israel. Israeli police shot and killed a second potential bomber. A militant spokesman says the two bombers entered Israel through Egypt after fleeing across the breached Rafah border crossing which is now being sealed. Hours later Israel carried out an air strike north of Gaza City. Palestinian medical sources say a senior militant was killed.
The US Geological Survey says a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake has hit Chile. It struck the northern part of the country near its borders with Bolivia and Peru. In November a 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the same region. The next day three large aftershocks destroyed thousands of homes.
There's been a shooting at a high school in Memphis, police say one student was shot and that student's injuries are described as not life threatening. The school is still on lockdown but one male student is in custody. There is no word yet on why it happened.
New York Yankee's pitcher Andy Pettitte is talking to House Committee lawyers again today to explain what he knows about steroids in baseball. It's part of his preparation for a public hearing set for next week. That's when he may talk about findings in the Michell report on drug use in baseball. Two days after that report was released, Pettitte admitted he took human growth-hormone for two days in 2002 to deal with an elbow injury.
Well, those are the headlines this hour. Stay with CNN for more on these stories and the other news of the day.

Hey there, from the CNN Center in Atlanta, I'm Virginia Cha. Thanks for checking news with us. Here is a look at what's happening right NOW IN THE NEWS.
Voters from the Atlantic to the Pacific helping choose the major party presidential nominees. Each party will hand out more than a thousand delegates to its nominating convention. Republican candidates squaring off in 21 states and 22 states are holding democratic contests.
Natalee Holloway's mother says she can start mourning and healing now that she knows what happened to her daughter. But Joran van der Sloot says he was lying during an apparent confession that was caught on hidden camera.
AT&T set to raise the price of its most common broadband internet services by 5 dollars a month starting in March. The company says the price hike will affect customers using the three slowest broadband tiers but excludes the states acquired with the Bellsouth buyout. New customers who sign up online for the slowest broadband service will not be affected, nor will those who signed up under special package promotional deals.
If you are planning to fly United Airlines this spring, plan on packing an extra 25 dollars if you travel with a second bag. Beginning in May, United Airlines will charge certain customers a 25-dollar fee each way if you check a second piece of luggage. And if you wanna bring a third bag, it will cost you 100 dollars extra. United says more bags means more weight and more weight means more fuel. People who buy non-refundable or international tickets or who have elite frequent flier status won't have to worry about this new fee.
Today isn't just Super Tuesday. It's also "Fat Tuesday". Today's Mardi Gras, the big party in the Big Easy after 12 days of merry mayhem. More than a thousand police officers patrolling the French Quarter to try to keep the celebration safe.
Please be sure to stick with .com 24/7 for news from all around the world because we are gonna have updates for you right here throughout the day.
Words&Expressions
Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras:

The presidential primary campaign is past the halfway mark and it's still a long way from over. Super Tuesday put two dozen more primaries and caucuses in the books and yet nothing appears to be settled yet. For democrats, the two-way race to the nomination is if anything tighter than ever.
Police in Germany now say arson could be to blame for a fire that killed 9 people including 5 children. We showed you this photo yesterday of a baby being thrown from a fourth-floor window. Firefighters caught him down below but the boy's mom is still hospitalized. German officials are holding a wreath-laying ceremony this afternoon.
The chief medical examiner in the city of New York says actor Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose while abusing prescription drugs. The toxicology result revealed Ledger had taken a combination of several medications including painkillers and cold medicine. Ledger was found dead at his New York apartment on January 22.
The FDA is warning fish processors to avoid buying seafood from the northern Gulf of Mexico. Fish harvested near a sanctuary off the coast of Texas is apparently at risk for a toxic algae known as ciguatera. The Fed say at least 28 people have become sick. Grouper, snapper, amberjack and barracuda pose the biggest threat.
Well that's a quick look at what's making news this hour. Stay with CNN for more on these stories and the other news of the day.

I'm Naamua Delaney at the CNN Center in Atlanta. And here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, as you just heard, has suspended his campaign for president. The decision was made after his showing in this week's Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses, GOP sources say. While Romney captured seven states in Tuesday's primaries, Senator John McCain won more delegates. Romney says he is leaving the race because he loves America and that he agrees with Senator McCain's stands in the war on terrorism.
Police say a teacher was shot by her husband at an Ohio school in some kind of domestic dispute. No students were hurt. Police have surrounded the man's home. There is no word on the condition of the teacher.
It is being called the biggest organized crime roundup in decades. A law enforcement source tells CNN that dozens of members of the Gambino crime family are in custody in New York and New Jersey. Reports say authorities in Italy are also conducting raids on alleged organized crime clans involved in drug trafficking.
Tornado victims across the south now face the painful process of assessing the damage and dealing with the death. Today, some survivors are cleaning up the mess left behind from the storm. 56 people died in the worst series of twisters in 23 years. Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff is touring the campus of Union University right now. President Bush visits Tennessee tomorrow where 32 people were killed.
An Amber alert has been issued in Texas for a missing 5-year-old boy. Austin police say Adrian Jaimes was taken by two Latino men who forced the boy into a grey Volkswagen Jetta this morning. Jaimes is about 4-feet tall and weighs about 50 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a green jacket, black T-shirt and dark blue pants.
Well those are the headlines this hour. Stay with CNN for more on these stories and the other news of the day.

Good Friday afternoon to you from CNN.com headquarters in Atlanta. I’m Naamua Delaney, here’s a look at what’s happening NOW In The News.
6 workers’ bodies have been pulled from the rubble of the Dixie Crystals sugar plant near Savannah Georgia. About 100 people were working in the plant when it was rocked by an explosion last night. Dozens of workers were hurt in the blast and fire, many severely burned over most of their body. Firefighters are still trying to put out the last of the flames. They say the building is unstable and dangerous. Officials suspected the explosion was set off by sugar dust which can be volatile.
President Bush visited Lafayette,Tennessee today for a firsthand look at the area hardest hit by this week’s swarm of tornadoes. Late yesterday, he declared 5 Tennessee counties major disaster areas, clearing the way for Federal financial aid. This morning he promised that help is on the way.
….to listen, to determine, you know, to make sure the federal response is compassionate and effective. I don’t want people to think something is gonna happen that is not gonna happen, therefore when we say something’s gonna happen to help them get their feet back on the ground, it will happen, ”
Three days after the storm, officials say there are still hundreds of people who remain unaccounted for in Macon county Tennessee alone. But they think many of them may be in hotels or staying with relatives.
The White House Visitor Center which attracts millions of tourists every year was evacuated today. Officials say a small amount of ammonia spilled in a nearby storage shed and some of the chemical fumes leaked out. 9 people were hospitalized after complaining of irritated eyes, nausea and vomiting. Chemical and biological experts from the Secret Service along with the D.C. Fire Department were on the scene. A spokesman says it turned out to be a minor manageable spill that was contained within the shed.
A makeshift memorial now sits on the steps of the City Hall in a St.Louis suburb where a man killed 5 people before police killed him. The victims included 2 police officers and 3 city officials. The gunman identified as Charles Cookie Thornton had a long-standing feud with the city government and recently lost a free-speech lawsuit against the city. He burst into a city council meeting last night. 2 people were wounded. The city’s mayor is in serious condition and a reporter who was covering the meeting is listed in satisfactory condition.
Well, you are now up-to-date, CNN is your source for the latest headlines on line on TV or on your wireless gadget. Thanks for logging on.

Voters in four more states are choosing the person they want to be their party's presidential nominee. Both parties are caucusing in Washington State and there are democratic caucuses in Nebraska and Republican ones in Kansas. Meanwhile Louisiana is holding its Democratic and Republican primaries. Also today, Republican caucuses in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands and Democratic caucuses in the Virgin Islands. Senator Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have made Washington state the prime battleground. Both of the states' female senators have endorsed Senator Clinton, but Washington Governor Christ Gregoire has decided to back Obama and appeared at a rally with him in Seattle yesterday.

Later today the both head to Virginia which holds primaries on Tuesday. It looks as if software giant Microsoft will not acquire Yahoo after all. According to the Wall Street Journal, Yahoo plans to reject Microsoft's unsolicited bid of 44.6 billion dollars. The paper reports that Yahoo's Board believes the offer massively undervalues the company.
And striking Hollywood writers are gathering in Los Angeles and New York to vote on an agreement that could end the three-month-old walkout. The Writers Guild of America says it will present a deal with the major Hollywood studios to its striking members. An end to the strike would clear the way for the Academy Awards show to be held without disruption in two weeks. The writers could be back at work as early as Monday.
Space Shuttle Atlantis has docked with International Space Station. Atlantis and its crew of seven are delivering the giant European-built spacelab to the station. Also in whole, there are a couple of bowls of salsa, spice of those dehydrated space food packets. It's a present for Station Commander Peggy Whitson celebrating, by the way, her 48th birthday.
