Hello, I am Melissa Long here at the CNN Center in Atlanta on this Friday, November 30th. Here is a look at some of the stories that are happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
For angry crowds in Sudan, jail time isn't enough for a British schoolteacher convicted of insulting Islam. Some are shouting for her to die. Thousands gathered to demand harsher punishment for Gillian Gibbons. The court ordered her jailed for 15 days and deported to Britain for allowing her students to name a teddy bear Mohammad. The sentence begins from the day she was arrested, meaning she has ten more days in jail. Protestors say she should pay with her life for insulting Islam's prophet.
Leaders in Turkey say terrorism is not suspected in the overnight crash of a Turkish jetliner. The plane crashed as it was attempting to safely land in southwest Turkey. Everyone on board was killed.
It is the battle of the demonstrators in Venezuela. Today, thousands who support President Hugo Chavez's constitutional reforms took to the streets in Caracas. It's the last-ditch effort before Sunday's referendum. The reforms would expand presidential powers by doing away with term limits and give the president control over the central bank. They say the reforms would turn Venezuela into a communist dictatorship similar to Cuba.
Today, two of codefendants of NFL star Michael Vick learned how they would be punished for their involvement in a dogfighting conspiracy. Quanis Phillips and Purnell Peace could have received up to five years in prison, but instead, they received lesser sentences of 18 to 21 months. A third defendant will be sentenced next month. Vick has already turned himself in to begin serving his sentence early. He will find out exactly how long it will be on December 10th. The defendants all agree to plea deals on conspiracy counts for organizing vicious dogfights on Vick's property in the State of Virginia.
The number of US combat deaths in Iraq is heading for the lowest monthly level since March of last year. So far, with one day left, of course this month, 26 US troops and a civilian Pentagon employee have died in combat. The November toll could mark the sixth consecutive month of declines in U.S. personnel death. USA Today is reporting the decline shows a turnaround in the war because of the US effort to establish security and defeat insurgents. The change in strategy in January initially brought up the number of US deaths, but now violence in the country, overall is down.
And you are up-to-date on some of the major stories happening on this Friday. Do stay with CNN for more on these stories or other news of the day.

Hey there, I'm Virginia Cha at the CNN Center in Atlanta. Here's a look at what's happening Now In The News.
In Johannesburg, South Africa, thousands of music fans have gathered to mark World AIDS Day. Former South African President Nelson Mandela organized a benefit concert to help raise AIDS awareness. He told concert goers they have the power to help reduce the disease's impact, especially in the developing world.
"Start off by protecting yourself and your loved ones, talk openly about HIV and AIDS. Urge those around you to change their attitudes to people living with HIV."
The World Health Organization says more than 33 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. It takes its deadliest toll in the developing world where 95 percent of the infected live today.
A British teacher jailed on blasphemy charges in Sudan could be one step closer to freedom. Members of the British Parliament are in Sudan today trying to win her release. Gillian Gibson was convicted of insulting Islam by allowing her students to name a teddy bear Muhammad after the founder of Islam. Sources say she may go home on Monday.
The Turkish military says it intensely engaged more than 50 Kurdish rebels inside Iraq's borders. The Turkish army's website is reporting significant casualties. A spokesman for a Kurdistan's regional government confirmed the attack, saying it included shelling and rockets. He also said Turkish troops did not enter Iraq. Tensions have been high along the border with Turkey threatening to launch a full-scale cross-border offensive against rebels in northern Iraq.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is hoping for a big victory in parliamentary elections tomorrow. During a final day of campaign on Friday, he urged voters to turn out big numbers to support his United Russia Party. Opposition parties complained of intimidation and that new election rules favor Putin's party. Political watchers say a United Russia win would virtually give Putin a mandate to continue playing a leading role in Russian politics even though he must step down as president in March.
Finally, a truffle sold at a charity auction across 3 cities has fetched an enormous price. Look at that thing. The gastronomic delicacy weighed in just over 3 pounds. It's sold for 330,000 dollars. Happy eating.
And those are the headlines at this hour. For more on all those stories and your other news of the day, CNN is your source online, on TV, even when you are on the go.

Hey, there. I’m Virginia Cha at the CNN Center in Atlanta with the latest top stories.
They’re counting the votes in today’s Russian parliamentary election. The Associated Press reports exit polls indicate that President Vladimir Putin’s party won more than 60% of the vote. That could potentially pave the way for Putin to become Prime Minister after he steps down as president.
Observers say it’s a promising sign that two British envoys are delaying their departure from Sudan. They are trying to secure the early release of teacher Gillian Gibbons from a Sudanese jail. Gibbons is behind bars, charged with blasphemy for allowing her students to name a teddy bear Muhammad. She was sentenced to 15 days in jail.
The snow and ice storm that pummeled the Midwest yesterday is now blamed for at least 7 traffic deaths. Some snow is still falling in several Midwest states, but the bulk of the storm is heading toward New England where it could dump up to a foot of snow in some places.
It’s no laughing matter for dozens of staffers on the Tonight Show, the employees who are not writers, have been laid off as the four-week-old writers’ strike continues. The show has been in reruns since the walkout started November 5th. Strike negotiations are on hold till Tuesday.
If you are planning to file your taxes early next year, you may not get your refund as quickly as you’d like. The IRS is considering delaying the start of its filing season if Congress fails to pass a tax bill in the next two weeks. If a delay goes into February, that could mean a halt on more than 87 billion dollars worth of refunds. Congress is trying to figure out how to handle an increase in the number of people facing a higher alternative minimum tax.
And those are your headlines at this hour. For more on those stories and all your other news of the day, CNN is your source on TV, even when you’re on the go.

Hello, I’m Melissa Long here at the CNN Center in Atlanta on this Monday afternoon. Here’s a look at some of the stories happening Now In The News.
Senior US intelligence officials say Iran suspended its nuclear weapons program in 2003. But they add that the country continues to enrich uranium. The finding is a change from 2 years ago when American intelligence believed Iran was actively pursuing nuclear weapons.
President Bush is urging Congress to get down to business as it begins a short holiday session. He wants lawmakers to pass a long-stalled funding bill for the Iraq War without attaching a date for troop withdrawal.
Venezuelan voters have said “NO” to President Hugo Chavez by the narrowest margins. They defeated a referendum that would have allowed Mr. Chavez to stay in office indefinitely. The White House welcome the results. But Chavez says despite his defeat, he will continue pushing for the reforms.
President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia Party won big in Russian parliamentary elections over the weekend. It took nearly 2/3 of the vote. Putin’s term ends in 2008, but the strong showing could help him stay in power possibly as Prime Minister.
And a killer storm barrels through the heartland and now is plowing into the Northeast. Much of the region has been battered with snow, sleet and freezing rain. Parts of New England could see a foot of snow or more. And that could mean an ugly travel day in the Northeast yet again. And that same storm system created even more chaos in the nation’s midsection. Hundreds of flights were canceled over the weekend. And the Associated Press is now reporting 14 traffic deaths linked to the winter storm.
You’re up-to-date. Those are the headlines at this hour for this Monday December 3rd. Do stay with CNN for more on these stories or other news of the day.

Now in spite of this wintry weather, crews have three boats out on the canal and divers are searching the water.

President Bush is set to unveil his plan for helping homeowners caught up in the subprime mortgage mess. The voluntary plan calls on the mortgage companies to freeze introductory teaser interest rates on subprime mortgages for five years. Many of the mortgages are scheduled to reset to higher rates in the next a few months. The White House says because the plan is voluntary, it doesn't amount to a bailout by the federal government .
And Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made a major speech to try to allay concerns about his Mormon's faith. He said if elected, he would keep his religious belief separate from presidential decision making. Romney's address at the George HW. Bush Presidential Library has drawn comparisons to then candidate John F. Kennedy's 1960 speech about his Catholic faith.

From the CNN Center in Altanta, I'm Nicole Lapin, Here's a look at what's happening right NOW IN THE NEWS.
In Oklahoma City we are just hearing about a high school that's been placed on lockdown after gunshots were fired at an officer right near this school. Actually you are looking at the neighborhood right now but the school is very close to this area. CNN affiliate in this area KWTV is now reporting that the shooting happened around 11:45 in the morning local time. And police have reportedly caught one suspect, but a second person might actually still be at large. Authorities have confirmed that the Southeast High School has now been put on lockdown. School officials are saying that the shooting, however, did not occur at the school. We will keep you posted on this one.
"911, what's your emergency?""There is the one with the gun ..."
As is being sounded like, this 911 call recorded during Wednesday's Omaha Mall shooting. Well, it has just been released. Only gunshots, you just heard a second ago, can be heard run off the top, then it is followed by as you hear right under me, this terrified store worker describing the scene for officials. State officials meanwhile say that the teenage gunman spent 4 years being shuffled to foster care, various treatments in the State after trying to kill his own stepmother.
Barry Bonds meanwhile has entered a not guilty plea on federal charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. The indictment stemmed from the federal investigation into BALCO. The Bay Area Lab is accused of distributing those illegal steroids. Well, back to 2003, of course Bonds testified in that federal probe of Balco. He repeatedly denied knowing anything about taking banned substances. But if he is convicted, Bonds could get up to 5 years in prison on the perjury charge and 10 years for obstruction.
There is another twist to tell you about an investigation of this missing American teenager Natalie Holloway in Aruba. All 3 suspects, well, they are now free again. An Aruban judge has ordered the release of Joran van der Sloot. The judge apparently felt that a recent investigation did not reveal any more direct evidence linking him to Holloway's death. Holloway has not been seen since that 2005 vacation with her friends in Aruba.
Today marks the 66th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.About 50 survivors are attending an annual replaying ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial. Well, this year they’re dedicating the memorial for the USS Oklahoma. More than 2300 Americans were killed in that attack, almost 1200 were hurt.
Be sure to stick with CNN.com 24/7 for all the news all around the world and of course we're gonna get you some updates right here throughout the day. Take care.

I am Asieh Namdar at the CNN Center in Atlanta.
We begin with new developments in the case of a British man who police say faked his death. British authorities have charged John Darwin with obtaining a money transfer by deception and making an untrue statement to get a passport. He has a court appearance Monday. Darwin reappeared last week, five years after he was believed to have drowned. Two British tabloids called Darwin's wife as saying mounting debt and love made her go along with her husband's elaborate plan. She says they have lived in secret for years, even keeping their sons in the dark.
Also an update on a missing pregnant woman in Ohio. Attorney Karyn McConnell Hancock has been found alive. Police in Toledo are not giving many details, only that the woman is alive and that there will be a news conference later. McConnell Hancock is six months pregnant. She had last been seen Wednesday at her law office in Toledo.
We are also learning more about the growing controversy over the CIA's destruction of some sensitive videotapes. Sources say then White House counsel Harriet Miers and the CIA's top lawyer warned against it. But one source says the lawyer wasn't informed of the plan until the tapes had already been destroyed. The tapes showed the questioning of two terrorism suspects using controversial methods. The CIA says they were destroyed because they posed an intelligence risk. But Congressional Democrats are demanding an investigation.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates (is) pushing for more international pressure on Iran. At a security conference in the Persian Gulf Kingdom of Bahrain today, Gates said Iran must vow not to develop nuclear weapons and to open up its facilities for inspection. A recent intelligence report said Iran suspended its nuclear weapons program four years ago. But Gates says Iran's leaders could decide to restart the program at a moment's notice.
A no-go for the Space Shuttle Atlantis today, the planned launch has been put off until tomorrow at the earliest while engineers look for a problem with fuel tank sensors. They will meet within the next few hours to decide if they need to push the launch back even further.
And those are the headlines this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, CNN is your source online, on TV or when you're on the go.Words&Expressions
at a moment's notice:Notice is used in expressions such as 'at short notice', 'at a moment's notice' or 'at twenty-four hours' notice', to indicate that something can or must be done within a short period of time.

I am Asieh Namdar at the .com newsroom in Atlanta. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf is promising to lift the country's state of emergency December 15th. That's one day earlier than planned. He also tells CNN's Wolf Blitzer parliamentary elections scheduled for January 8th will be (quote) "free and fair". Today former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's opposition party announced he will contest the elections. Sharif had threatened into boycott the ballot which is supposed to bring democracy back to Pakistan after eight years of military rule.
The first summit of African and European nations in the years has ended with an agreement and principle, but question is about how to put it into action. Delegates spent their two-day meeting discussing trade, immigration, human rights and the environment. They signed a pact promoting business ties and democracy, but trade proved to be difficult. The World Trade Organization has asked a number of previous trade agreements between the two sides be renegotiated.
Back here in the US, Republicans are preparing for a debate tonight in Miami. It will be broadcast on Univision Network. The candidates' answers will be immediately translated into Spanish. They are hoping to woo Hispanic voters, many of whom have recently shifted their allegiance to Democrats.
NASA has scrubbed the launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. It was supposed to lift off about two hours from now. But it will remain grounded until January 2nd at the earliest. Technicians called off the launch due to a faulty sensor on the main fuel tank. The shuttle needs to deliver a long-awaited module to the International Space Station.
And that's the news this hour. For more on what's happening around the world, tune into CNN television or log on to .com. And don't forget you can get updates through your wireless phone as well anytime day or night. I am Asieh Namdar. Thanks for watching.
